Visitor Visa

The Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) stipulates that all foreign nationals must apply for and obtain a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before appearing at a port of entry. There are certain factors to consider and the entry document you need depends on:

  • the type of travel document you plan to travel with
  • the country that issued your travel document
  • your nationality
  • your method of travel to Canada for this trip

Generally, a foreign national is allowed to remain in Canada for up to 6 months, unless specified by an officer upon entry, which is based on certain factors like:

  • the applicant’s means of support
  • the period for which the applicant intends to stay
  • the expiry of the applicant’s passport or other travel document

There might be cases though, where a visa might not be required as some countries are visa-exempt.

To obtain a visa, some basic requirements must be met:

  • 1. Eligibility
  • 2. Admissibility

You must be ELIGIBLE. You must have a valid travel document, must be in good health, have no criminal or immigration-related conviction; must convince an immigration officer that you have strong ties to your home country, must convince an immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your visit and must have enough money for your stay. You may also need a medical exam and letter of invitation from someone who lives in Canada.

 You must be ADMISSIBLE. Reasons for inadmissibility may include involvement in criminal activity, in human rights violations and in organized crime. You can also be inadmissible for health, security or financial reasons.
