Express Entry

Express Entry

Express Entry is an electronic management system that is used to process applications for permanent residence. It expands the economic classes to include Federal Skilled Workers (FSW), Canadian Experience Class (CEC), Federal Skilled Trades (FST) and even the Provincial Nomination Program (PNP).

     How does Express Entry work?

  1. Applicant needs to know if he/she is eligible and if he/she meets the minimum requirements.
  2. Applicant reviews the requirements of the program he intends to apply to.
  3. Applicant creates a profile online and submits his/her Expression of Interest. Applicants are ranked according to a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) and they enter a pool of candidates where draws will be made.
  4. Applicant prepares and collates all pertinent documents.
  5. Applicant receives Invitation To Apply (ITA) or a provincial nomination certificate.
  6. Applicant submits a complete permanent residence application.

  • Federal Skilled Workders (FSW)
  • Federal Skilled Trades (FST)
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
  • Provincial Nomination Programs (PNP)

A foreign national who applies under this stream is assessed according to a selection grid criteria which includes language, education, age, work experience and other factors deemed vital to economically establish oneself in Canada. After meeting the minimum requirements, the applicant will be further assessed against a point system.

Selection Factors
If all the minimum requirements are met, the application will be assessed based on:

  • Age (priority given to younger workers)
  • Education (foreign or acquired in Canada)
  • Work experience
  • A valid job offer
  • Language skills (English and/or French): CLB 7 is required in all abilities (reading, writing, speaking, listening)
  • Adaptability (the likelihood of settling in Canada)

To qualify, the applicant must score 67/100.

The applicant must also show proof of funds or must have a valid job offer, necessary to support himself/herself and other family members.

Aside from this, the applicant and family member/s must be ADMISSIBLE.

The Federal Skilled Trades Program is for skilled workers who want to become permanent residents based on being qualified in a skilled trade.

To qualify under this program, the following minimum requirements must be met:

  1. Language: there is a language level required for each ability: CLB 5 for speaking and listening and CLB 4 for reading and writing
  2. Work experience: have at least 2 years of skilled work experience in a skilled trade in the last 5 years before applying. The work experience must be full-time or an equal amount in part-time. The applicant must meet the job requirements for that skilled trade as set out in the National Occupational Classification. He must have a valid job offer of full-time employment for a total period of at least 1 year or certificate of qualification in that skilled trade issued by a Canadian provincial, territorial or federal authority
  3. Education: there is no educational requirement for this stream.

Skilled trades for the Federal Skilled Trades Program are organized under these groups of the National Occupational Classification (NOC):

  • Major Group 72, industrial, electrical and construction trades
  • Major Group 73, maintenance and equipment operation trades
  • Major Group 82, supervisors and technical jobs in natural resources, agriculture and related production
  • Major Group 92, processing, manufacturing and utilities supervisors and central control operators
  • Minor Group 632, chefs and cooks
  • Minor Group 633, butchers and bakers

The major NOC groups are subdivided into different occupations, and they are all skill type B.

Under this steam, there is no need to submit proof of funds if you have a valid job offer or you are legally allowed to work in Canada. However, you might need to get assessed by the province or territory for your trade. You may also need an employer in Canada to give you experience and training. The process varies from one province to another.

And like the other programs, the applicant must be ADMISSIBLE.

The Canadian Experience Class is for skilled workers who have Canadian work experience and want to become permanent residents.

To qualify under this program, the following minimum requirements must be met:

  1. Language: there is a language level required for each ability (reading, writing, speaking, listening) – CLB 7 for NOC O and A; CLB 5 for NOC B.
  2. Work experience: have at least 1 year of skilled work experience (Skill level O, A or B) in Canada, in the last 3 years before applying. The work experience must be full-time or an equal amount in part-time. The work experience should have been gained by working legally in Canada and the duties performed should be the same as those set out in the lead statement of the National Occupational Classification (NOC).
  3. Education: there is no educational requirement for this stream.

Under this steam, there is no need to submit proof of funds.

And like the other programs, the applicant and family member/s must be ADMISSIBLE.

Do you have a skill set, education or work experience that you think can contribute to a specific province’s economy?
Do you want to settle in that province?
Do you see yourself being a permanent resident in that province or territory?

If you answered YES to these questions, then the PNP might be the right option for you.
Each province or territory is different and there are varying requirements to each.

Under the umbrella of Express Entry, the applicant can choose to:

               > Contact the province or territory and apply for a nomination. If the province or territory agrees to nominate you, you create an Express Entry profile (or update your profile if you already have one) and show you have been nominated.

                                                                                                            OR

                > Create an Express Entry profile and show the provinces and territories you’re interested in. If a province or territory sends you a “notification of interest” to your account, you contact them directly. You apply to their Express Entry stream:

**If you’re nominated, the province will offer it to you through your account, and you accept it electronically.

In both cases:

  • You must meet the eligibility requirements of the province or territory. And,
  • You must submit an Express Entry profile and show that you meet the minimum criteria for Express Entry, including being eligible for one of the immigration programs it covers.

If you are invited to apply, you submit an electronic application to IRCC.
